How can digital cameras today make images with small and varied sizes as found in vintage photography?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

You see heirloom photos in albums and frames that had a variety of custom sizes, mostly smaller. Standard today is 4×6. How can digital cameras or software take the same types of images with the same size range?

The size of the print is today a matter of the size of paper the printing machine takes, and then your desire to trim one or more sides.

Today’s store-front machines use rolls of paper: a 4" roll can produce prints 4×6, 4×8, 4×10, etc Each lab tries to find the optimum mix of paper size 4", 5" and so on, and surfaces (glossy, lustre, etc) that keeps clients coming through the doors.

The paper is cut after the image is printed, so the image can be printed any length, and is only limited by the width of the paper.

A hundred years ago, the image might have been made by placing the negative directly on the printing paper, then exposing the sandwich to light, then processing the paper. The paper came in single sheets.

In the 19th century, the photographer also made the negative material. Some processes required that the image be exposed while the "film" or plate was still wet!

So, the print size was limited to the size of the plate or film in the camera. The quality of image capture (film or plate) a hundred or more years ago often wouldn’t allow for enlargements – the blown up image would show film or lens shortcomings.

Historically, there were always many cameras using many different negative sizes – far more varied than film today – so there were many different print sizes.

The 4×6 convention is just that – a convention, not a direct result of cameras or digital imaging.

A standard print size allows for large-scale production of frames and albums for that size, reducing the costs.

What camera did the american soldiers use in the vietnam war?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In the vietnam war the american soldiers caught the war on camera with black and white film.

I was wondering what the make and model of that camera was.

If there were a few cameras that were used, please state all and the one that was mostly used.

I am interested in what the camera was that they used.

Thanks

I remember setting up the pin-hole camera, taking the cap off and retreating to a safe spot while waiting for the image to be taken, and returning to put the cap back on. Developing was a pain! ;^)

I remember having a Kodak instamatic or equivalent, and I got my first good camera, a Pentax 35mm spotmatic, at a PX somewhere, sometime in 1968.

What digital camera would you suggest to buy?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

My cousin and I really don’t know anything about buying a good digital camera. My cousin needs one and she said she’s willing to pay up to $300 for a camera. She wants one that has a rechargeable battery. If you have any good suggestions about what digital camera to purchase please let me know your opinion and where could we find it brand new with a good value.
Ohh i forgot to put that she needed a waterproof digital camera because we’re going to Philippines and take the camera to beaches. What’s a good waterproof camera?

The samsung cameras are really good. I had one which was digimax S500 and I took really good pictures, but I took it to Mexico on a mission trip and it got wet so it stopped working. I bought the latest version which was the digimax S630 in green, but the screen broke. I have an HP camera now and I dont really like it, my mom has a digimax S630 in silver and Im always taking it. They are like $100 but they take 2 AA batts, I have the energizer rechargable though. But for like $150 I think they have some that have the recharable battery. I really like those cameras, I’ve had plenty of cameras and that one has great quality, you can also choose the option when taking a pic that it flashes twice so you cant blink. I took pictures last year at prom a couple months before it got wet in Mexico and I got them printed out at Costco and they looked great. I really love those cameras, I hope I can get the screen on my green one fixed before I go on my trip to Sydney this July.

How do I activate the camera lens on the front of a Samsung Blackjack?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

There are two camera lenses, one at the back and another in the front. I can’t figure out how to use the front lens to take pictures. Is it just meant for video calling?
It’s the i600. It definitely looks like the Blackjack, I’m not sure what version it is, though. Samsung came out with several versions.

Are you sure you have a BLACKJACK? I have both the Blackjack and the Blackjack 2 and neither have (2) cameras. There is only one on the back of the phone.

Why are film camera lenses supported on metal runners?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Cameras like the Arri (for shooting celluloid) or Sony’s Cine Alta and other video cameras adapted for cinema (vs. TV) have what look like two metal bars that run under the length of the camera and lens. Is it just because film lenses are heavy and need extra support? And what is the contraption called?

Yes, they support adjustable lens shades and matte boxes.

Which is the best digital SLR camera and lens combination available within 500$?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I have used point and shoot cameras for 2 years and would love to graduate to digital SLR cameras.
I would prefer a camera which is not too new in the market.

I happen to like the E series digital SLR’s from Olympus. At ten megapixel’s, the camera’s lens is astoundingly sharp and the whole enchilada will cost you well within your budget. Check some of the sites like B&H Photo. Be wary of kits that offer you a bunch of stuff you don’t need. There’s also a package deal with two zooms for the E-510. Great feeling camera in the hand as well.

Camera reviews and plagiarism?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I know it is classed as plagiarism but is it ok to copy and paste camera reviews for your own website? I have seen pretty much the same reviews on various websites and was wondering if there is anything wrong with this?

You answered your own question – plagiarism is virtually never OK.

It’s definitely not okay to simply cut and paste other peoples’ work uncredited (and in some cases, even if it’s credited). Even if it turns out to be legal, it’s incredibly impolite to rip off other peoples’ work unless the author has clearly indicated they don’t mind that (for instance, by putting the work under a Creative Commons licence that doesn’t require attribution).

Also, you shouldn’t be publishing "reviews" of cameras you haven’t used – if you *have* used them sure, quoting a brief excerpt of someone else’s review to illustrate your own is probably okay, but if you’ve used it enough to review it you should have enough material to write your own!

What if cameras can take pictures on things that are invisible by the naked eye?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I heard people are developing cameras that can take pictures and videos on subjects that can only be seen with a microscope. What would you do with such a new feature? Would that be even better if this camera is on a cellphone?
By "invisible" I mean that they are too small to be seen by the naked eye, rather than truly invisible like ghosts

What makes you think you could see a picture of something not ordinarily visible to the naked eye? An invisible object in a picture would also be invisible. Even if certain cameras can take pictures of invisible objects, we’d never know.
