Which is the best digital point and shoot camera to buy currently?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Hi, I really need help to buy a digital camera asap. All the online reviews have only further confused me.My requirements are:
1. 7-8 megapixel
2. 3-4 optical zoom
3. LCD screen
4. Good night pictures
5. different shoot modes
6. video (optional)
7. sharp, bright pictures
8. anti shake
9. face detection
10. as compact a body as possible.
I used to have a fancy for sony cybershot models but am told they are not as good as canon or nikon. fuji has also been recommended. A salesman recommended either the fuji F40 or the nikon S500 or the canon IXUS950. Can anyone help please? I have a budget of up to $500 but don’t necessarily have to go all the way so long as I can get a good reliable compact camera that has all the latest features and gives me the best pictures.

I have a canon, and I love it! the only thing it doesn’t have on your list is the IS (anti shake), but there are models that have it. The canon A series is really good, but the ELPHs have a lot of cool features, and are compact. I spent a little over $300 and that included, a canon SD1000, an extra battery, a carrying case, and a ScanDick UltraII 2 GB memory card. Look into it…

How do make a camera travel around a circle in 3ds Max?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I have a model of a guitar and I’m trying to set up the animation for the camera to travel around in a circle to show off 360 degree viewing. I’m using a path constraint with the camera to a circle to get the 360 but every time I move the camera around the circle weird effects happen. Camera moves in opposite directions, jumps around the circle, or moves to new starting positions. Any advice or tutorials?

First – don’t use path constraint on the camera directly.
Instead – use it on a dummy, and link the camera to the dummy.
This way you can still move the camera around the dummy.
Secondly – there are 2 common causes for your problem –
1. The camera is moving a lot faster than you think it is. check the path constraint and verify the starting and ending frame.
2. the camera is aligned (or almost aligned) to the Z direction. if that is the case your only solution is to rotate the whole scene.

Can you use a digital camera like a good ole fashioned manual camera to take great black and whites?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I have found that it is pretty difficult to take great quality photos with a digital camera. I think a good 35mm camera takes incredible pictures, and a digital just takes ‘good’ photos. Whattaya think? Am I just doing something wrong? (PS.. I’m not a professional photographer, and don’t even know how to use a 35mm…. I’m just referring to pictures I have seen, not taken, with a ‘good ole fashioned manual camera’ ! )

All very good answers, but something struck me in the details if your question – you said you’re not a pro and you’re asking this question in the context of casual photography…

If you’re talking about the 4×6 colour photos you send to the labs, those images are printed by machines that correct color casts, and because digitals take generally softer pictures, the film images need no sharpening.

If you just take a digital, some models, especially the pro digital SLRs, leave the image as original as possible, leaving all the editing to the person, which is what the pro wants. Nonetheless, to make great looking ditital prints requires an awareness of how to edit the photo afterwards and print properly – without the two, you cannot get rival images.

On the flipside, the editing power that is given to the hands of the photographer with digital greatly surpasses what as possible with film – once you give the image to the lab, its out of your hands. You can crop, clone, colour adjust your digital image any way you want, allowing the person who invests time in learning how to edit digital images the ability to work wonders on their image.

You also mention black and white. Traditional film b&w photography is generally the pervue of pro photographers. If you want to do a digital-film comparison, I have first hand experience in both.

I’ve developed and printed my own 35mm images for a little over a year, and have done digital for three, I’m sure there;s photogs with even more time under their belt.

What I concluded was that, when it comes to the final quality of the print, digital cannot surpass the feel and look of a fiber based or even an RC film print. Some paper textures used for film printing, I’ve searched high and low for a digital equivalent and heve never been satisifed.

Some prints, some type of photography, come out so well on film, I would be surprised if I would get a similar result in digital. Film has a wider latitude (can discern a greater amount of difference between extreme black and extreme white) than digital.

But I have only rudimentary experience in image manipulation in the wet darkroom. Dodging, burning, etc… all that comes so much more easier for me in the digital darkroom. I can achieve results that I could never do in film.

So in the end, each has its pluses and minuses. I find any view that definitively concludes one form is superior over the other is narrow and not taking into account each format’s individual strenths.

How do I connect a video camera to my computer if it doesnt have anywhere to plug in a USB cable?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I need to get videos off of my video camera onto my computer to edit them and put them onto dvds, but I can’t hook it to my computer because the video camera is so old it doesnt’ have a usb port and the only thing the camera does have are video/audio out ports .

Depending on the features available in your camcorder model, here are a few things that you can do to achieve your objective:
1 — If you have firewire port in your camcorder, get a firewire card installed in your PC and then using the s/w provided with the camcorder, transfer the video onto the pc.
2 — If your PC has a TV tuner card, give the o/p of your camcorder to this tuner card and then get the video transfered onto your PC

Here is a helpful guide to transfer videos from camcorders to computers.

What is the best and safest way to clean your camera lens?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I have a very expensive camera and I am afraid to clean the lens with something that might damage it! HELP!!

First, DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT use alcohol on any part of your camera, especially the lens.

Second, DO NOT use a Q-Tip on a lens.

In 37+ years of enjoying photography I have never used a liquid lens cleaner.

Use a lens cloth made for a camera lens. You can order them on-line or buy one at your local camera shop.

While you’re buying your cloth buy a UV/Haze filter to protect the front element of your lens.
