The dam is owned by RUSHYDRO, which has a marginal government participation. The dam was short changed on repair materials and staff to increase profits. RusHydro continues to deny safety concerns with other dams that it manages. Why do you think Russia has turned into a cesspool of crime? It’s not the mafia, it’s a complete lack of regulation and corruption in the levels where regulation is supposed to occur..

I hate to see a country’s infrastructure crumbling like this. It’s not only in Russia, but all around the world, and in America as well. Preliminary reports found that Russian utility investors were not willing to invest in proper maintenance of the dam, and engineers were instructed to “make due” with what they had, just so that the shareholders at the top could make an extra ruble. 74 people paid with their lives for that profit. Sound familiar? That’s unregulated capitalism for you.
