What does lenses on a camera mean?

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

I had a camera, Samsung SL420 and it was good at pictures. It was those manual cameras and im not sure about the lenses you know? Because I want to take pictures of small pictures. Like maybe plants or very close detail. What camera lenses should I be getting?
Nono, I meant, what does the mm stuff mean, like, you see it at the front of the camera. Not the megapixels, but the other numbers

"35-175mm equivalent"

That basically means 5X zoom.

"1:f/3.5-5.5"
That means, at the wide side (35mm) the lowest f-stop your camera lens has is f/3.5 and at the telephoto side (175mm) the lowest f-stop your camera lens has is f/5.5

If you don’t know about f-stops, then this doesn’t matter to you, as the point & shoot’s f-stops are all auto.

I have many x700 minolta camera lenses and wonder if they would fit a newer minolta digital camera?

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

my minolta x700 camera has lots of sizes of lenses and I am wondering if I purchase another minolta camera (but digital) are these lenses interchangeable?

The only way to use your older manual focus lenses is to buy an adapter. There is one that allows use of your SR mount lenses on a Sony DSLR and ones to use them on a Nikon or Canon DSLR. You will probably have to use stop-down metering which is a real pain. It might be best to just sell your film gear on eBay and use the money towards a Sony DSLR.

is there an adapter that allows you to put camera lenses on any kind of camera?

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

i’m an enthusiastic filmmaker, but i’m not the richest guy. i have a Sanyo VPC-GH3 Camera which works really nicely, but the lens and such has it’s limitations.

i was browsing the other day, and i came across an adapter that allows the iPhone 4 to use all those big, expensive lenses and i thought that, surely there had to be something similar for normal cameras, like mine.

i Google’d it, but i wasn’t able to find anything of that nature.
so my question is simply if there is such an adapter, and if there is what it supports and where i can get it?

Well, sort of.

For a long time (decades) Nikon, Canon and Leica lenses have been used on cinema motion picture cameras

There are a very few professional video cameras that can use those same lenses using special adapters.

But not ALL lens brands an be used and not all of those mentioned above can be used either

First you will have to search for video cameras with the ability to use interchangeable lenses. Next you will need to find out which lenses can be actually used on each of them. Finally you will have to see if any of then are the lenses you already own

Can I use my old Nikon film camera lenses with a Nikon D90?

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

I have a Nikon film camera with a big collection of different lenses. I want to upgrade to the Nikon D90. Can I still use my old lenses with it?

You can use all your older Nikon lenses with the D90. The AF, AF-D, AF-I and AF-D lenses will work beautifully. The AI-S lenses will still work but manual focus and without metering of EXIF data. The AF lenses will be quick and give some great images!

how would you compare camera lenses with concave or convex lens?

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

how would you compare camera lenses(wide angle, telephoto or normal) to concave or convex lens?

Most of the camera lens are made up of a no. of elements which are a mix of convex, concave , plano convex etc. making the final assembly a compound lens. The nature of this compound lens is of a convex lens.

What camera lenses are compatible with the Sony NEX 3 (without having to buy an adapter kit) and can you link?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I’m looking to buy an additional lens for my Sony NEX – 3 camera (I currently own a 18-55mm lens) and would like to know if there are currently any higher mm zoom lenses available. I don’t want to have to buy the A-mount adapter, and if you can link me to the lens, I’d really appreciate it, thanks!

Here is a link that will show you the three current E-mount lenses as well as the adapter for A-mount lenses

What are the best camera lenses to use for portraits and concerts?

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

I just want to hear your suggestions about what camera lenses to use use if you want to…

Take sharp portraits. A lense that captures face and body well. When you photograph outfits or fashion and makeup pictures.

Secondly, I wonder if there’s any good lense for concert photography? I guess I should look for a tele-zoom. Some people say they make pictures more blurry. Is this true or just a myth?

Thank you.

Good portraits can be taken with any quality lens, however something in the 50mm-85mm range is good on a APS-C sized sensor (ie entry levels & prosumer DSLR’s). I use either a 50mm f1.8, a 50mm f2.8 macro or an 85mm f1.8.

Concert work – well depends on how close you are & how much light there is. If you’re some distance from the stage you’ll need something with some reach – a good general purpose lens would be something like the 18-200mm. If its dark, you’ll need a lens which is capable of wide apertures (ie f2.8). Unfortunately, to get a combination of long reach AND wide aperture costs a great deal!

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

I just got the Canon EOS 20D from my cousin and she said that I have to buy a lense for it.What camera lenses are recomended for the camera?
What I’m looking for:
Long Zoom
Easy Focus

have a look at Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens
- Cheap, compared to other L class lenses.
- Can take in 1.4x extender with little impact on image quality (IQ).
- Very sharp, similar sharpness to its more expensive brothers.
- Very light weight! Other 70-200mm lenses in Canon’s line are heavy

How do you get fungus inside your camera lenses?

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Hi on e bay on some of the camera Lens wright ups alot of the time it says no fungus or little fungus. My question may be strange but I want to know how do you get fungus on the camera lenses in the first place so I know not to make that mistake with my camera equipment thanks

Fungus comes from warm, damp, dark environments, places like the cupboard under your stairs, or the boot of your car.

To avoid fungus getting on your gear, don’t get it wet. Don’t keep it in the boot of your car or under the stairs. Occasionally shoot without a UV filter, fungi don’t like sunlight.

If you have to store a camera, pack it with a lot of silica gel packs which will absorb moisture, and don’t leave it there for too long.
