EYE PHONES for Digital Video Cameras. A Plea to Manufacturer

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

After moving to the Midwest, I found myself finding some old drawings and papers for all kinds of my old concepts and designs.

This one, may interest you. Back in 1976, there were no digital cameras, no tiny LCD screens, no cell phones, and no personal computers.

This was 20 years before Windows introduced PCs with Win 95!

But I had an idea for a way to project a tiny TV image on a screen in front of your face. It could be hooked to a Portable TV or a VCR, I envisioned.

So I made this drawing. I showed it to my technician friends at Daden Accociates and Lark Engineering, where I worked.

They all loved the idea, but knew there was no kind of technology to makes something like that work.

Well, we all know that nowadays, we have virtual reality headsets, that are quite different than my design, but nonetheless, it is now being done.

Be that as it may, this is my plea to manufacturers who make cameras with no gunsights, or viewfinders,.

I hope they come up with a way to make EYE PHONES to see your subjects clearly, not squinting into the tiny screen with sun and light reflecting on it.

Seems logical to me, and I think Professional Videographers would love it too.

The Virtual Eyephones could be shut off at anytime with a switch to revert to normal viewing thought electronically controlled sunglasses.

The most controversial version I have come up with, would have OPTICAL TRANSMITTERS which could directly send the video signal to the brain through the eye.
Of course there would be stereo sound through the ears.

So come on camera manufactures, make me a set for my camera.

Thanks.
Dave Herbert.

Have digital cameras really changed that much in the last two years?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I bought a new digital camera about two years ago. Has the technology put into digital cameras changed a lot since then? Enough that I should look into investing in a new one? It works well but the picture quality isn’t excellent- especially if I don’t use flash and I like not using flash. Also, is it possible to upgrade the camera I already have- like you could a computer by having a new processor and software installed?

In the P&S arena, the image quality has not changed much, but the number of "features" has.

If you are happy with the image quality you have been getting with your current camera, don’t spend your money on a new camera.

The usual cycle is buying a new P&S camera every three to four years. Some people like have the latest toys, so they usually buy a new cell phone and camera every two years.

My neighbor still uses an over six year old Kodak P&S camera and it produces excellent images, good enough for posting on the internet and printing 4×6 inch photos. She also uses that camera to produce shots of products she makes an sells on craigslist and other e-Commerce sites.
