Canon 450D EOS Digital SLR Camera Rebel XSi Auto Lighting Optimizer – Canon EOS 450-D
Let the Canon EOS 450D brighten your day by turning muddy, underexposed shots into bright, beautiful images. When shooting, the Canon 450D DSLR camera analyzes your photos to determine proper exposure and contrast. If a shot is too dark, Auto Lighting Optimizer of Canon 450D applies just the right amount of brightness and contrast to save the day. This intelligent feature can correct underexposed images, shot in AE mode or with a flash, as well as images exhibiting low contrast due to mist or haze. There is also a new face detection in Canon EOS 450-D feature that brightens faces in backlit scenes — ideal for obtaining crisp, nicely exposed portraits and group photos when shooting into the sun. Auto Lighting Optimizer can be turned off when not needed in Creative Zone mode.

After all I’ve done …
After all I’ve done a few test and the best is to keep it at it’s default of Medium “Standard”. Off will make it too dark and high too bright. There’s quite a big difference between low-med but I still think medium is somewhat better so stick to default.
The most important feature is actualy (Highlight Tone Priority) which for some stupid reason is disabled by default on the 500D/T1i.

Is this function …
Is this function only kicked on in Auto modes? Can you turn it off? Does anyone know if the T1i has it too? Thanks

I used to have it …
I used to have it on, but not anymore cause its annoying how you loose control of exposure compensation. Say you want to push 2 stops, so you tweak (aperture or exposure) to get a +1 stop reading… now, the auto lighting optimizer will UNDO it somehow cause it thinks you made a mistake.
This thing basically adds an s-curve. If you suffer from the problems this things solves, you are probably not shooting right.

In this case i …
In this case i would agree, but only in daylight,as for trying to use live view for focusing on the night sky, this being without a very bright subject such as the Moon or Venus, then its back to the viewfinder. There is nothing like seeing for yourself, and ive been doing this for 28 years now,,oh and the 450D is my first DSLR,kit lens /tamron 70-300/Canon f/1.8 50mm lenses to dip my toe into the Digital Pool. But i still love 35mm Cameras.Pentax,Nikon & Canon…

I think what he is saying is,Too many people of today depend on electronics to do the work for them, rather than learning about a particular subject be it,, Photography, videography or as he says Driving.

The feature is just …
The feature is just awesome. I’ve been wondering forever when they would add something like this. Instead of the crappy picture you took, the camera will automagically replace it with a better one! How cool is that!! So easy, even an idiot can do it!!!
May 1st, 2010 at 10:42 am
so nobody but Nikon …
so nobody but Nikon is allowed to have such a system? Canon’s system is probably better anyway, cuz Canon generally makes better cameras.

I actually just got …
I actually just got this camera and I think live view is amazing. I didn’t think I’d use it, but sometimes I can focus manually better than the camera can. I can use live view to zoom in digitally and check to make sure my focus is dead on before I take the picture. Pretty helpful, I think.

If you got or buy …
If you got or buy an DSLR just look on how you do a good exposure. It is nonsense to use bad auto-exposure and then correct it with this stupid seconds auto-correction. Or otherwise shoot raw to correct the exposure. BTW. exposure is one of the most stylistic elements of doing good pictures for hundred years and it will be.

It’s not an …
It’s not an advantage. This and Liveview are just anouther steps in making DSLR cameras less professional which in turn means that more people will buy DSLRs instead of compact cameras and there will be even more crappy photographs made with DSLRs.
