Closed Circuit Cameras for Canada Day
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
VICTORIA – The Victoria Police Department is using three closed circuit cameras to keep a watchful eye over Canada Day festivities in the Inner Harbour.
In the past, Police have arrested numerous people for assaults, underage drinking, and fighting.
The Privacy Commissioner has been notified and Police say they will comply with all privacy laws.
The cameras will be monitored by Police from 7 pm to 1 am on July 1st, and removed after Canada Day.
The footage taken will be kept for 60 days, and up to a year if it’s needed in an investigation.
Some people are concerned with the cameras, saying they’re an invasion of privacy. Others are fine with the cameras, and say they are there to keep people safe and secure.
