How do you take videos off of a video camera and put them on the computer? I am using a Sony Digital 8 camera.?
I really want to take the videos off of my video camera and put them on the computer for editing. But even though I have the chord and everything, when I plug in the camera, it does not appear on the computer screen. What do I need to do?
(again, I am using a Sony Digital 8 Video Camera)
Thanks!
I plugged my video camera into the computer and went into "Windows Movie Maker", but when I plugged it in, the camera showed no signs of being plugged in and the software didn’t recognize it.
Digital8 and miniDV tape based camcorders write digital video information to the tape.
Just connect the camcorder’s DV port to the computer’s firewire port. USB will not work. USB-to-firewire cable/hub/adapter/converter things will not work. If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one. When corrently connected, with the camcorder in Play mode, your video editor will import high quality DV-format video.
Firewire, DV, I.LINK and IEEE1394 are all the same thing… USB is generally used only for transferring stills from the memory card.
If you are unwilling or unable to add a firewire port to your computer, then the analog method is required: You will need to get a capture card or "analog/digital converter" – Pinnacale (Dazzle) and Roxio (among MANY others) make them with USB connectivity.

you need to use a video capture software like windows movie maker to import the video and sound from the cam into the PC..
once you get it imported, then it’s a simple matter to do whatever you want to the video, add titles, edit scenes etc.

You can do this yourself using a firewire cable and a video capture program. Windows Movie Maker should come pre-installed on your computer, StashSpace.Com also has a free one called StashBox.
Connect the firewire cable to your computer and the dv out port of your digital8 camcorder. Then click record in the video capture program, and play on the camcorder. Your video will be transferred to a digital file on your computer in real-time as it plays on the camcorder.
Another option is to use a video transfer service. StashSpace.Com also offers this for just $6.95 per tape. You can use their online software to watch, edit, and create customized DVD or just get back the raw files on a hard drive or data DVD.
